Declaration of the Permanent Synod of the UGCC


   We are profoundly disturbed by the actions of the state security forces on the Maydan Square in heart of Kyiv conducted under the cover of the night.
We condemn the action directed towards restricting civil liberties, especially the freedom of expression and peaceful civic manifestation of the citizens of Ukraine.

Ukrainian greek catholics and Jewish community establish metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky medal


   The Jewish community of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) established a special award – the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Medal, which will be awarded to persons who serve the cause of Ukrainian-Jewish reconciliation.

Pope announces Synod on Pastoral Challenges of the Family


   Pope Francis has announced the Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will held at the Vatican from October 5 to October 19, 2014.
The theme of the Extraordinary General Assembly will be “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.”

Canonization date announced for Blessed Popes John Paul II and John XXIII


   Pope Francis held the Public Ordinary Consistory for the forthcoming Canonization of Blessed Pope John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II. During the course of the Consistory in the Vatican's Consistory Hall, the Pope decreed that his two predecessors will be raised to Sainthood on April 27, 2014, the day on which the Church celebrates the Second Sunday of Easter and Divine Mercy.

Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI has had an exchange of letters with the noted Italian mathematician and philosopher, Piergiorgio Odifreddi, excerpts from which appeared in the Tuesday edition of the Italian daily, La Repubblica.

Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church not ready to change to gregorian calendar


   The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will not change to the Gregorian calendar in the near future because there is no background or reason for this, Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk said during a web conference at RISU. Patriarch Sviatoslav said that part of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in some countries changed to the new calendar, but it led to the division of parishes.

Pope Francis: “Words can kill”


   Where there is God there is no hatred, envy or jealousy, and there is no gossip that can kill. This was the message at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily this morning as he celebrated Mass in the Casa Santa Marta after the summer break.
The Pope first reflected on today’s liturgical reading which tells of the meeting between Jesus and the people of Nazareth as recounted by the Gospel according to Luke.
